Entrance 1 is internally connected to the nearby residential area La Heredia. What is the History of El Madroñal?

The rich history of the area begins in the past century. The Parladé family, part of Marbella royalty, owned the vast estate, which spanned over 1,500 hectares and encompassed current La Zagaleta, El Madroñal and La Reserva de Alcuzcuz. In the early 1960s, it was a hunting estate frequented by Spanish royals and heads of the state. This era marked the inception of the estate's legacy. 

As time progressed, the estate changed hands, reflecting the evolving landscape of the region. The French multi-millionaire Roussel family (Thierry Roussel is also known as the fourth husband of Christina Onassis) acquired the estate, continuing its legacy for a time before eventually selling it. It was during their ownership that significant developments occurred in the area. El Madroñal started to provide its residents with a classic Riviera lifestyle, when the first millionaires built their exclusive retreats in the foothills of Sierra de las Nieves, just a short drive from the coast.

In a noteworthy transaction, the estate found its way into the possession of the Saudi businessman Adnan Khashoggi, the most extravagant billionaire of the modern era known for his lavish lifestyle. Both La Zagaleta (former La Baraka) and El Madroñal became his expansive hunting estate, and hosted many famed parties in the 70s and 80s. 

Eventually, the land was divided and sold to different owners, resulting in the formation of the three current urbanisations of La Zagaleta, El Madroñal and La Reserva de Alcuzcuz. These subdivisions have since evolved into some of the most sought-after residential communities on the Costa del Sol, each with its own unique character and allure.

As a natural paradise, El Madroñal has always attracted many creative people. It was a Hollywood retreat, where several celebrities including Madeleine Carroll, a “Hitchcock Blonde”, had their homes. The actors of the classic drama Casablanca stayed in El Madroñal. In 1997, Björk, a groundbreaking Icelandic singer, created there her iconic track ‘So Broken’. The El Cortijo recording studio, once located in El Madroñal, was a famous spot where well-known artists worked at their songs and albums. Many talented musicians including The Cardigans, Mariah CareyCherSadeBjörk, and Roxette composed, produced and recorded their songs there. The El Cortijo recording studio ceased operations in 2013. It existed in the villa that was recently sold for €4.7 million.
