What is the history of Nueva Andalucia?
Nueva Andalucía starts next to Puerto Banus, on the other side of the road N-340. José Banús, a visionary developer from Madrid, built both neighbourhoods. He came to Marbella in 1962 with an idea that many people called “insane” - to create a marina and an exclusive residential area for wealthy people who would “live, socialise, dine, shop and dance the night away in style”.
Coming from a family of constructors, Banús had achieved success in building low-income properties. However, inspired by the accomplishment of the Marbella Club Hotel, Golden Mille, he invited Noldi Schreck and Marcos Sáinz, the architects from Mexico who worked at the image of Marbella Club, to build the port. The construction of Puerto Banus began in 1965. Its design has roots in traditional Andalusian pueblos, as well as in Acapulco and Beverly Hills, where Schreck, the Russian-Swiss-Mexican architect, worked. It was his idea to make the marina look like an Andalusian village, not a tall skyscrapers area. In 1970, Puerto Banus’ opening was grand. Young Julio Iglesias was hired to sing there; 300 best waiters from Sevilla served 22 kilos of beluga caviar. Among the 1700 guests were a famous businessman Aga Khan, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner (with his Bunnies), Hollywood film director Roman Polanski, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco.
Don Jose never had a chance to regret about his investment. The most expensive properties in Puerto Banus were sold, as the newspapers wrote, “en un pispás”. or “in a New York minute”. In Nueva Andalucía, Jose Banús built apartments, townhouses and villas, both for sale and for the families of his workers who were building the port. In La Campana, he also built a church and a school.
